Pebble Update: LAST WEEK to comment on Pebble Mine EIS Scoping
…deadline is Friday June 29
How will the Pebble mine affect you – if all goes as planned or if it does not?
The Army Corps needs to know.
Please take a moment to invest in the future of Bristol Bay by commenting on the Pebble Mine Environmental Impact Statement Scoping – before the deadline next Friday, June 29.
Public comments received in the EIS scoping guide the Army Corps of Engineers in what issues should be addressed in the federal NEPA process for the Pebble Mine. The proposed mine site includes:
- The mine project site – 4000 acres will be forever altered
- Acid waste and less hazardous waste storage
- Road and pipeline to Lake Iliamna,
- Barge terminals and all year icebreaking and barging at Lake Iliamna,
- Road and gasline to a shipping terminal in lower east side Cook Inlet,
- Lightering to an offshore deepwater port and shipping through Cook Inlet.
The project phases include:
- Construction – 2000 workers for four years
- Operation – 850 workers for 20 years
- Closure – reclamation, water management, road and culvert maintenance and monitoring for generations to come.
If any of this will affect you and your fishery, please take time to comment on at least one aspect of the project as an investment in your fishery and the future of Bristol Bay.
