Salmon Habitat Information Program (SHIP)
As you and other Alaska salmon fishermen get into the full swing of pre-seaon prep, we’re scanning the horizon for policies and events that impact the health of our salmon fisheries. This month, the State of Alaska is asking about the best process for keeping salmon streams clean and clear. Outstanding National Resource Water (ONRW) designation is the highest water quality protection available under federal law. It prohibits human-caused pollution that would degrade water quality. States are federally-mandated to have a process to consider nominations for ONRW waterbodies. Alaska does not have a process yet. UFA believes the review process for nominations should
Commercial fishermen like you can weigh in right now to ensure transboundary river water quality remains high and fisheries support our fleets for generations to come. Large mines at the headwaters of our major transboundary fish rivers can impact essential habitat for Alaska’s salmon and other fisheries.

Thank you for helping UFA understand your concerns and better stand up for our Alaskan salmon industry and resource! Now that the Alaska Legislature is in peak action season, we’ll be sending more regular email updates on issues affecting salmon habitat. A whopping 93% of fishermen taking the salmon habitat survey said they take action for habitat by calling decision makers,

By working together, we can become powerful advocates for pro-salmon policies and ensure commercial fishing jobs remain strong for generations.
THANK YOU for Telling Us Your Priorities!
Back in September, UFA closed the Salmon Habitat Information Program (SHIP) survey – and contest to earn airline tickets or fishing gear.
If you took the survey then, THANK YOU!
And big thanks to all the gear groups who encouraged their members to weigh in too.
The ideas and suggestions that fishermen shared in the survey will be extremely valuable in steering SHIP and UFA in the coming months and years.
Congratulations to These Big Winners!
Over 500 Alaskan fishermen took the survey, and over 400 connected with SHIP on Facebook to keep in touch. These winners were chosen at random:
$500 Alaska Airlines gift certificate
$200 LFS gift card
The rush of insightful comments shared by survey takers was beyond our expectations… so, in thanks, we’re also giving away UFA sweatshirts to these 5 people:
There’s More to Come
If you’d like sneak peaks into what other fishermen say about Alaska salmon habitat, how UFA will use survey results, and all the news about the salmon habitat you use, please keep in touch!
Over the fall, UFA will review survey results, digest the information, present the data to the UFA Board at its upcoming meeting, and form a plan for moving the program forward.
Thank you again for helping guide SHIP, and stay tuned for more!
